MIND ASSASSIN – The Pay Off (2015)

The Pay Off
(Alone Records / 2015)

You can tell I’m a little behind on my review schedule when you start to see releases like MIND ASSASSIN’s EP only getting its well deserved written mention at this point. It took a while to get here, but better late than never, I guess.

This band was formed back in 2008 and this is their only release to date, thanks to Alone Records from Greece, whose support to the Heavy Metal cause has given us many good records in these past couple years.

“The Pay Off” is a pretty solid effort from a band that knows how to balance the somewhat traditional sound of American Heavy Metal with a slower feeling that can bring to mind those brief years in Black Sabbath, when neither Ozzy or Dio were present or, for that matter, some of the more recent work from Candlemass. But, althought the whole EP keeps itself within a safe distance from the flashy and sometimes exagerated clicks that we so often find in these kind of bands, the general feeling is that of band who can hold his own in case of being called upon the Higher Court of Heavy Metal Goodness.

They may not be that fancy or exquisite, but MIND ASSASSIN were able to cut a good debut here, with solid tracks and an overall good heavy vibe. 6/10 [RM]

LUNG FLOWER – Beyond Burn Out

LUNG FLOWER have posted a new psychedelic music video for the song ‘Beyond Burnt Out’, in support of their latest album ”Effigy”, released during April 2016. The album is the follow up to their 2014 EP “Death On The Crowsnest” and 2012 debut album “Under A Dying Sun”.

The band shared a few words:

The video was mostly shot in an abandoned house on the outskirts of Abbotsford BC. We chose this location because it was a perfect symbol for the meaning of the song, the purposely literal lyrics conveying the everyday struggle of the modern day city dwelling man. Burning the candle at both ends eventually leaves you hollow and empty, like most of this house was. We felt that this house, with its disrepair, a sad shadow of what it probably once was, served as our metaphor for a person trying to walk the edge of the abyss, the edge of alleviation and addiction. Someone who is quite literally Beyond Burnt Out.

OMNISIGHT have a new EP on the way

OMNISIGHT will start the new year with the release of their new EP “Power of One”, on January 20th, to follow their live album, “Live At The Theatre”, released in 2016.

The Vancouver band is influenced by bands like Soundgarden, Dream Theater, Meshuggah, Tool, and Faith No More, but try to go a step further and create their own thing.

Vocalist/guitarist Raj Krishna talks about the song ‘Power Of One’, which you can stream below:

“I think our guitar player fans will really like the new EP.  I think fans of the songs will also be pleased with the thoughtful lyrics. I’m questioning the status quo. The song ‘Power of One’ is about how one person can make a difference in the world around them just with knowledge and a little spiritual balance. The album as a whole is a musical journey, there is the concept of standing up to the oppression and deceptions of the ruling class.”

CHARIOTS OF THE GODS shared a new lyric video for the track ‘Resurrection’, in support of their new album “Ages Unsung”, which was released this past September.

The band commented on ‘Resurrection’:

For the third lyric video, we thought “Resurrection” could be a great addition to our series of singles. The song talks about the rising of beasts ready to set the world ablaze. With the US elections having passed, we felt the themes can somewhat be connected. We went into new territories with this one, but we’re really proud of the turnout. We hope you will enjoy it!

JUPITER HOLLOW are gearing up to release their debut EP “Odyssey” that will be distributed by Milagro Records and due out on January 13, 2017.

The concept record will feature 5 tracks to introduce their Ambient, Experimental, Progressive songwriting plus will act as a prelude to their planned full length “AHDOMN”.

JUPITER HOLLOW’s sound is usually referred to as spacey, experimental and refreshing, reminding listeners of bands like Tool, Pink Floyd, A Perfect Circle, Tesseract, The Contortionists and Rush.

The duo states:

This EP is a concept record, it will tell the story about two characters fighting one another in order to save their civilizations, but they just can’t do it. They’re in control of their civilizations future, but then you actually find out that there’s only one person, who’s actually fighting with themselves. They’re unhappy with who they are when they look in the mirror and realize they can’t grow past their indifference, and that they actually aren’t a good person and the people from their civilization will die.
