FROZEN OCEAN – The Dyson Swarm
(Krystallblut Records – 2014)
Vaarwel is an extremely versatile and busy individual. He is also the sole member in FROZEN OCEAN, an entity set to sail in the atmospheric black metal arts with many ambient characteristics also present. “The Dyson Swarm” is the eighth album in this project’s discography, which started back in 2005 when the first demo came out. In between, many EP’s came along the way, keeping a strong umbilical cord to a very esoteric musical presence.
The black metal description is very widely presented in this record, owing that same description to the dark and grim moods in which we are taken on a voyage, throughout all these seven songs. The scarce vocals we’re presented, in the song ‘CE-4’ and the title track ‘The Dyson Swarm’, also denounce that same influence but, in general, FROZEN OCEAN’s music is more based on an electronic sensibility, almost soundtrack borderline, reinforcing its ambient colors.
Even with instrumental guitar pieces present, those segments end up wrapped and dominated by the rhythms and melodic frames created with the use of keyboards and similar features. But that does not preclude Vaarwel’s darkened visions, even if this album’s songs seem to point to cosmos and its infinitude, because if there is a place where darkness abounds it is right up there!
